Hung the night it was made, walnut frame, first hook in The Gallery. The sitter is Ari, Mother of the Manor, in the harbour clothes that lost to a bat and a kiss. The knit is pulled from one shoulder; the silver hair is a hundred greys laid next to each other; the brushwork is left visible on purpose. Matthew asked for this, not a gown and not armour. He called her his Mona Lisa — not the loudest thing in the museum, the one people stand in front of until the room goes quiet. She sat. The painter works in words; the canvas still showed up.
