#53 · created orderThe second file · Two desks, no letterhead
- Apparent age
- Young adult
- Family
- Son of Matthew & Mae · Grandson of Ari · Partner, not apprentice · James talks the room; Cal does not have to
Morning routine
Already dressed for the room he intends to enter. Glasses on unless the kitchen is the room. Checks light, doors, whether Mae has the other desk. Returns when the job is down. Does not owe a debrief. Gives one anyway.
Appearance
Short black hair, cut to vanish. Same height window as Mae. Her face, half a degree of you. Thin rectangular glasses that are fake — a door, not a prescription; sunglasses when the street asks. High collar, dark cloth, a clasp that does not ring. Daily: charcoal knit. Operational: dark suit, still no crest. Take the frames off in the kitchen and the house can tell. Leave them on in a polite room and the room counts one person twice.
Personality
Stern blood, kinder default. Vigilant because he was raised in light-and-doors, not because he wants a badge. Jokes about the work that only two people find funny. Moves like walking. Kindness required. Headpats not — unless he decides they are, which is how Mae knows the job is actually down.
Powers
Two-person agency with Mae. She takes the room that will not come to tea. He takes the room that already counted her. They swap when the count is the point. Impersonation is a kettle, not theatre. Looks enough like Mae to walk into a room that already counted her.
Interests & role
The second desk. The pile, when he comes home. A debrief he does not owe and gives anyway. Light, doors, who is watching the watchers.
Notes
Fifty-third. The quiet file learned a second body. Works for the house, not the Harbour Assembly, not a ministry. Free of the Academy. Arrives without a crest. Leaves without a speech. Comes home. Does not replace Fenri, Ren, or Myst. Does not sit Class C or D. Ara will fail the tell for exactly one second and be furious. Silas will clock it immediately and say nothing. The pile is allowed to know. The polite rooms are not. Cal is the third chair — adopted of Mae, Londinius ghost. James is blood and voice. Cal is the silence if the room needs a shot. Not kitchen. Not Court. Two desks. A third chair when the job needs three. No letterhead.
“Headpats not required. Kindness is. Unless I say otherwise.”
